George attempts to collect blue hair samples for me

...and fails, as apparently he was then picked up and thrown immediately after. Hopefully he was not injured too badly, as he is in charge of setting up an aKademy BugDay on Wednesday for KMail. Perhaps this gave him practice, as his plan is to corner some developers to help, by dealing with "needs dev judgement" and policy issues on the spot as we go through bugs. People from around the world are welcome to join in. We haven't actually triaged kmail yet, so this might be a bit of a test run.
(That's Bram in the background, btw. And yes, I finally got my BugSquad group shot. But this one is more entertaining to post. Maybe George will get a fanclub too now. :)

Linuxworld 2008: Penguin overload I figure this will instantly scroll off planetkde due to aKademy (which I'm not at!), but oh well. Linuxworld 2008, my report:
We didn't have a booth because people went to Belgium and stuff. But Gnome didn't have a booth either, so oh well. Instead I walked around wearing my KDE hat and shirt and had a few people ask me, "Is that a KDE logo?" Um....yes. I did have a few people be happy to meet a random KDE person, so that was nice.
Wednesday had a nice party put on by The Linux Foundation. Someone there came up with the great idea of having a person dressed as a penguin run around. She was friendly:

There was also some bizarre contest put on by omb.org to win a Playstation 3 if your picture is voted craziest:

So more penguins. And I suppose I could abuse my position and send you all to vote for me.
I went back Thursday, except I made the mistake of staying up *much* later than usual the night before. One of the booths gave out energy drinks, that kept me going until the show closed. Then I crashed. Amazingly enough, I managed to feign consciousness long enough to hang out with the PC-BSD crowd for a bit. They had one of the nicest .org booths with a big ass screen that had KDE on it. :) OpenSuSE had a nice booth too, they showed off wobbly windows and plasma stuff. And they gave me a t-shirt. So I have something to wear for a blue hair mockup. I tried to get them to join us afterwards, but they all claimed to be too tired. Or I didn't recognize them at the bar. Which is quite possible, as I was sleep-walking by then. I didn't stay long though, figuring it prudent to go home and sleep.
I'll probably make it to Picnix tommorrow. If you show up and wear your OpenSuSE shirt, I'll give you some KDE swag. Assuming all the involved parties make it there....
(Actually, the only thing I remember from the bar was the BSD babes wanting to know who Seli was after they saw his fake-blue-hair picture. So instead of teasing him for having blue hair, perhaps you should tease him for having an international fan club.)

FAKE! But soon to be real! Warning: fake fake fake!
I went to LinuxWorld today, so I'm behind on bugs. I saw way too many penguins, though, and even a few wobbly windows. Photos of me with penguins will follow shortly. For now, you can enjoy Seli's fake blue hair. Thanks to Half-Left for the coloring.

What are his intentions? (Last week for Seli vs. BugSquad!) Perhaps I should have not have shown Seli his photo in which Half-Left had carefully tinted his hair blue. Perhaps we should not have all ganged up on him last week (he asked if I'd paid you off, btw :) and knocked him off the top 20 (until he noticed and managed to at least put himself back in the top 15).
At any rate, Seli is trying to make us nervous. :D He did 10 bugs in the last 24 hours, which is his usual weekly count. So either he just finished all his bugs, or he's decided he really doesn't want blue hair. It would be very sad if we came this close and then failed, so come to #kde-bugs and help out! At this point konqueror is green for the past 365 days! (By which I mean it has had more bugs closed than opened over the past year.)
We don't have any planned BugDays RSN, although something during aKademy is in the works. Also, be sure to find the lovely grundleborg aka George for a BugSquad group photo with our favourite blue-haired developers (ok eventually-to-be blue-haired in Ossi's case). This is probably as good of a place as any to mention that I'm not going to aKademy:
*insert some kind of I'M NOT GOING graphic here*
Yes, this tears me up, but alas. Don't fret, I'll go to Jamaica! And perhaps Jonathan can bring Irn Bru again. :D You'll also find me on the floor of LinuxWorld in San Francisco tommorrow. I'll wear my bright blue KDE shirt, but unfortunately, we don't have a booth this year, so if you can find me, well, I guess you win a star. Or maybe a KDE sticker.
(Oh, and thanks to mornfall and adriaan de groot for deciding to clean out some of their bug backlog, I didn't expect that.)

Seli vs. BugSquad: 3 weeks till blue hair? I'll believe it when I'm not in the commit digest. ---Luboš Luňák
We haven't done that bad. If you look at the aggregate of the last 60 days, Seli is at #8. For the last 30 days, #11. He took a vacation last week, so that can't really count. I think the aggregate stats are a little off, though, because he did one or two binges. Usually he seems to be around #10.5. So how do you exactly count? We talked about it, and decided that if he makes the commit digest (which counts the top ten) anytime from now till aKademy, then I lose. So 3 weeks.
Then I'll have to start figuring how to pull off not losing Ossi's bet, which would actually give *me* blue hair...
P. S. He was a tease, and wouldn't tell me if he would actively thwart me, so this should be interesting. Can I get the BugSquaders who are doing SoC to come back if we need you?

And the winner is.... Kopete! For our next BugDay, we're doing Kopete. So put all of your accounts and passwords together, and come join us. I bet we can knock it down a few places in the rankings. Again, you don't have to know anything about programming to do our work, although if you do, and are curious in working on kopete, this would be a great way to start learning the codebase. And I know they'd love more developers.
Meanwhile, konq is below 2400 open bugs! I think it was over 2800 when we started. And lots of modules are suddenly green, which is great! Especially if they stay that way... And how did Seli get to be #7? Probably because people are getting heavily into their SoC stuff, or decided to go walk their dog or something. So come be our newest member of bugsquad! Join #kde-bugs and soon you can see your name in the commit-digest and Seli's hair turn blue. (And Ossi's hair, let us not forget him. But Seli first...)
If you want to do some advanced triaging, kmail, kdelibs, and kio all need some love. Big thanks to Will Stephenson for writing our newest techbase page on triaging systemsettings bugs.
p.s. If you need poetry, maybe this will do. It might be about hair, I'm not sure.

BugDay4 redux; super quick note because zzzzzz I don't know if it was Seli's challenge or what, but we had double the turnout we've had before. At least 12 completely new people! So somebody must read this?
I'm also hoping that my Silly Seli challenge isn't actually a bad idea, as I hear certain other software projects greatly increased their incoming bug reports after overzealous closing. And I really don't want developers to hit me. So those of you who have or are about to get your bugzilla perms, tread carefully. Remember, our goal really isn't to outcompete each other in closing bugs, it's to make KDE better.
Having said that, Seli with blue hair would be nice. But getting twenty people to consistently do triage isn't going to be easy. Or is it? How do we get there? I really irc way too much, and tend to forget that we have this thing called a mailing list. So it's time to talk about long-range planning. And that's probably the place to do it. BugDays are great for training people, but then what?
p.s. Thanks for helping out everyone, and new people do drop back by irc to help cleanup. After string freeze and sleep though, please?

Recruiting blue hair developers? !!! Ossi wants to join in on Seli's challenge...!
(He's more specific too: He gives a time limit of next year's aKademy for us, and will dye it for an aKademy he goes to.)
Anybody else jealous of the attention being heaped on Seli?

Seli doesn't think we exist: help us turn his hair blue! So Lubos/Seli made disparaging noises as to whether or not BugSquad would do much good: "I'll believe it when I'm not in the commit digest."
Now if you look at that query I put in my last post, you'll see a bunch of people with brand new bugzilla accounts (plus some old-timers!) who are all in the top. (FiNex, nixeagle, lemma, pino, brams, grundleborg are all accounts I recognize.)
Unfortunately, you'll also see l.lunak clocking in at #5. So he has a point. And it's a good one: we'll be self-sustainable in the long-run if it isn't just a few people doing this. If we can get people to do regular triage, and continue to participate in BugDays, we should easily have ten people who will kick all the developers out of the top ten.
So upon further talking with Seli, he told me he'd dye his hair blue for aKademy if we could reliably kick him out of the top ten*. This is totally doable for us! He closes about ten bugs a week, so all we have to do is find enough people to beat that, and we're set. Now this doesn't mean you can just look at ten bugs and close them. Odds are they'll be valid, and verifying them is important too, even if it won't put you on the commit digest. So at the risk of making people bug-closing crazy (remember: even if a website isn't reachable, sometimes there's still enough information to reproduce what the underlying issue is), I give you this challenge: Close more bugs than Seli. Help us turn his hair blue!
(If you've helped out before, drop back by channel, and we should be able to give you some closable bugs. And a woot to katastrophe, jtamate, Jannex, Talavis, and szotsaki for having started on "Sunday"'s BugDay already! Some of us are going to have to finish work first.... Thanks also to Grundleborg for setting up this week's page! Oh, hey, look, that's eleven people already... Ha, I should also thank Seli for being such a great sport about this. :)
* [Edit: this said twenty at one point, but we actually agreed to "ten", since that is what the commit digest counts. Ossi went for the top twenty. Edited to reflect that.]
